A Comparison of Acoustical Characteristics between International Speech Test Signal and Korean Speech Stimuli

Abstract
Objectives: The International Speech Test Signal (ISTS) is an internationally recognized test signal that is being used in many countries to analyze technical evaluations of hearing instruments. It was recorded using six different languages, with six different women reading ¡®The North Wind and the Sun¡¯. Although the ISTS reflects the acoustic characteristics of six different languages¡¯, it is unclear whether the ISTS reflects languages which are not included in the ISTS, such as the Korean language. The purpose of this study was to compare the Speech Dynamic Range (DR) and the Long-Term Average Speech Spectrum (LTASS) between the ISTS and the Korean speech stimuli.

Methods: Fifty female talkers who speak Korean as a native language participated in the recording of a Korean translation of ¡®The North Wind and the Sun¡¯. Recorded Korean speech stimuli were concatenated without any pauses and were normalized at 65 dB SPL. Then, the DR and the LTASS were compared between the ISTS and the Korean speech stimuli.
Results: For the DR, the ISTS were higher than the Korean speech stimuli in most frequency bands. LTASSs of Korean stimuli were higher than LTASSs of the ISTS in the frequency band below 1,600 Hz. However, LTASSs of ISTS were higher than LTASSs of Korean stimuli in the frequency band above 1,600 Hz.

Conclusion: The current result indicate that the ISTS seems to not reflect the linguistic acoustic characteristics of Korean speech stimuli. Thus, a test signal based on the Korean language may be more effective for accurate hearing aid evaluation and verification of Korean hearing aid users.
